What is Build A Home?
Build A Home is a custom home building program in Western Pennsylvania that allows homeowners to manage the construction process for their home using our proven step-by-step instructions combined with expert guidance.
 
Homeowners looking to build their dream home choose Build A Home to realize significant cost savings. The higher your involvement in the construction process, the more money you save on the cost of your custom home. By acting as your own general contractor, you are keeping more money in your pocket.
 
 
How can I possibly build my own house? I don’t even know how to use a drill!
Relax, you won’t actually swing a hammer unless you have those skills and want to use them to build your home. Most of our clients don’t have any building experience whatsoever. What they do have is Build A Home. We show our homeowners how to manage the construction process for their home by hiring the right professionals we have vetted and worked with for years successfully. Beyond that, our homeowners are organized and are willing to spend their free time managing the details. When they have a question or have a concern, we are there to help.
 
 
Can I use a family member who is a plumber/electrician/painter to help me save on my new house?
Yes! With Build A Home, you choose the level of involvement you want in your home’s construction process. We have three levels:
 
  Owner-Builder: You manage the construction process of your home with our guidance. This level has the greatest savings.
   
  Build Your Own Savings: Realize savings by choosing what parts of the construction process you wish to manage. Perhaps you have a family member who is an electrician who can offer their services, but you aren’t interested in managing other parts of the building process.
   
  Custom Home Concierge: At this level, our Build A Home site supervisor does all of the work managing the construction process and your involvement beyond selecting interior finishes and other details is minimal.
 
 
How long will it take to build my home?
Every home is different, but the process generally takes between 4-6 months, depending on the home’s complexity and other factors, such as weather and contractor availability. We will work with you to provide a very realistic expectation for your move-in date.
 
 
How can I build a home for little to no money down?
Build A Home has partnered with US Mortgage Network on a unique mortgage offering. With our Closer Than Ever Mortgage™, you can use the “sweat equity” you will invest in the home to serve as the down payment.  In most cases, this means our clients don’t need to come to the closing table with large sums of money and they do not need to pay high mortgage insurance costs each month.
 
 
How much guidance does Build A Home provide?
Once you determine what level of involvement you will have in the construction management of your new custom home, our team will help you with the following steps:

Can I roll the cost of the land into the construction loan?
Absolutely. And in most cases, you can stay in your current home until construction is well underway before you place it on the market. No need to move twice.
 
 
What are some traits I need to be successful in acting as the general contractor for my new custom home?
If you can schedule appointments, make calls, pay bills and visit the job site once every day or so, then you would be a great candidate for our Owner-Builder package. If you would like to be less involved, we can accommodate you with our Choose Your Own Savings or Custom Home Concierge packages. The more you are involved in the home’s construction management, the more you will save!
